New MODERATOR Blog Post: Compact, Efficient, and Smarter — Advancing PCM Technology for Heating and Cooling

The latest blog post by Cowa Thermal Solutions AG introduces a breakthrough in Phase Change Material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage, developed as part of the MODERATOR project.

For years, PCM systems with a melting point of around 58 °C have been a reliable solution for domestic hot water production, offering excellent performance and compatibility across various heating systems. However, as heat pumps become central to modern heating, operating efficiently at lower temperatures, new storage solutions are needed.

Responding to this challenge, Cowa has developed the Cowa COMPACT Cell 48 — the world’s first latent heat storage with a 48 °C melting point. This innovation:

  • Reduces installation space by up to five times compared to traditional hot water tanks,

  • Delivers efficiency comparable to water-based systems,

  • Ensures compatibility with widely used heat pump refrigerants.

Within MODERATOR, the Cowa COMPACT Cell 48 will play a key role in enhancing waste heat reuse from data centres and improving the flexibility of low-carbon heating networks.

This advancement supports MODERATOR’s mission to build scalable, smart, and sustainable infrastructure for Europe’s digital and energy future.
