New MODERATOR Blog Post: Evaluation of Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage in Immersion-Cooled Data Centers
27.08.2025

We’ve just published a new blog post exploring how Phase Change Materials (PCMs) can turn server waste heat into a useful resource in immersion-cooled data centres. HSLU tested a custom PCM (PCM50, melting at ~50 °C) using a MiniCell setup over 130+ charge/discharge cycles, assessing stability, heat-release behaviour, and material compatibility with common metals.
Highlights: PCM50 showed stable cycling, near-constant temperature during heat release (ideal for steady output), and good compatibility—especially with aluminium—supporting compact thermal storage concepts such as COWA’s CompactCell. The results point to practical pathways for heat reuse, lower CO₂ emissions, and reduced operating costs.
