MODERATOR at Sustainable Places 2025: Showcasing Innovative Cooling and Heat Recovery Solutions

At this year’s Sustainable Places Conference 2025 in Milan on 8-10 October 2025, the MODERATOR project was represented by Yannick Krabben from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), who delivered two presentations highlighting MODERATOR’s contribution to the sustainable transformation of data centers.

“Keep it Cool” Workshop: Collaborative Cooling Solutions

In the Keep it Cool workshop, MODERATOR joined forces with other EU-funded projects developing innovative cooling solutions for data centers and industrial applications. The session focused on exchanging experiences, tackling shared challenges, and identifying pathways to accelerate net-zero cooling technologies across Europe. MODERATOR’s presentation centered on the development of the Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system, which enables the reuse of data center heat for other applications. The team shared recent experimental results, discussed the system’s integration potential in future energy networks, and received valuable input from other participating projects. This collaborative dialogue helped identify opportunities for synergy and optimization within the broader European research landscape.

R&D Block: “Data Centers, Digital Twins & AI for Sustainability”

In the main auditorium, MODERATOR contributed to the R&D Block on “Data Centers, Digital Twins & AI for Sustainability”, a session exploring how digital technologies and AI can enhance energy efficiency, resilience, and sustainability across Europe’s digital sector. Yannick Krabben presented “Turning Waste into Value: MODERATOR’s Approach to Heat Recovery in Data Centres”, providing an overview of the project’s objectives and case studies currently under investigation. The presentation highlighted how waste heat reuse can significantly reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, supporting the decarbonization of digital infrastructure.

Through these contributions, MODERATOR reinforced its commitment to advancing energy-efficient, circular, and sustainable solutions for the data center industry and beyond.
