CLIMA 2025 — Advancing Thermal Storage for Immersion Cooling

From 4–6 June 2025, the CLIMA 2025 Conference was held in Milan, hosted at the Politecnico di Milano. Organised as the 15th REHVA HVAC World Congress, the event gathered international researchers, professionals, and industry leaders under the theme: “Decarbonized, healthy, and energy-conscious buildings in future climates.”

The MODERATOR project was proudly represented by our partner Yannick Krabben from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), who presented key findings from Work Package 3 (WP3) on the development of an advanced Phase Change Material (PCM) for thermal energy storage.

The new PCM has been developed to operate at 50°C, with excellent cycling stability and high energy density, achieving the performance targets set out in the project. This material will be integrated into a next-generation compact storage system developed by COWA Thermal Solutions AG, designed specifically for use in immersion cooling units—a core component of MODERATOR’s approach to improving energy efficiency in data centres.

The presentation at CLIMA 2025 highlighted how the selected temperature level and material characteristics are optimally suited to reuse heat from cooling processes in digital infrastructure, offering both environmental and performance benefits.

MODERATOR’s participation in CLIMA 2025 contributes to the broader conversation around sustainable HVAC technologies and demonstrates the project’s commitment to combining scientific research, applied engineering, and climate-conscious innovation.
