New Blog Post: Following the journey of heat in Iceland — Moderator Visits Iceland's Energy Infrastructure

MODERATOR has published a new blog post by GEROSION reflecting on the consortium’s recent visit to Iceland and the lessons that its energy infrastructure can offer for more sustainable energy systems.

During the 30-Month Plenary Meeting in Reykjavik, hosted by GEROSION, project partners reviewed technical progress and discussed the next steps towards the integrated MODERATOR pilot. The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore how Iceland combines renewable energy, heat distribution and innovative carbon-management solutions at industrial scale.

The blog post highlights the consortium’s visit to ON Power, where partners saw how geothermal resources are used not only to generate electricity, but also to provide district heating for homes and businesses. The visit offered a valuable perspective on a central MODERATOR principle: heat becomes a useful resource only when it can be captured, stored and delivered where and when it is needed.

For MODERATOR, this is directly relevant to the project’s work on immersion cooling, waste-heat recovery and thermal energy storage. By improving the ability to recover and preserve heat from data centres, the project is exploring pathways through which digital infrastructure can contribute to local circular energy systems.

The visit also included an introduction to Carbfix, Iceland’s carbon-mineralisation technology, which permanently stores captured CO₂ underground. While MODERATOR focuses on thermal energy, Carbfix provided a wider example of how innovative technologies can transform environmental challenges into long-term solutions.

By connecting renewable energy, district heating, heat recovery, storage and carbon management, the Iceland visit reinforced the importance of integrated approaches for building a more sustainable energy future.
