New Blog Post: From Cooling Challenge to Energy Opportunity — Students Explore Data Center Waste Heat Recovery

MODERATOR has published a new blog post highlighting how students from the Applied Sustainable Systems module at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) explored the potential of data centre waste heat recovery through real-world case studies.

The blog post presents how the module created a bridge between research, education and practical application. Instead of working on predefined textbook exercises, students addressed open-ended challenges connected to ongoing European research, stakeholder needs and local energy systems.

During the semester, student teams explored several case studies, including district heating in the Beringen–Schaffhausen region, the NEST building at Empa, the Lugano-Cornaredo area around CSCS, greenhouse heating in Greece, and chocolate factories in Switzerland. Together, these examples showed that waste heat recovery is not a single technical solution, but a systems challenge shaped by local demand, temperature levels, infrastructure, timing and stakeholder cooperation.

The new blog post explains how this educational activity is relevant to MODERATOR’s work on immersion cooling, waste-heat recovery, thermal energy storage and heat reuse pathways. It also highlights how future engineers can contribute to understanding where recovered heat can realistically create value — from buildings and district heating networks to agriculture and industry.

The activity also strengthened links with the HEATWISE sister project through the NEST case study at Empa, where students explored how edge data centres, advanced cooling and heat recovery can be integrated into building energy systems. This connection demonstrates how sister projects can support each other through shared case studies, educational formats and knowledge exchange.

For MODERATOR, the module provided a valuable dissemination and ecosystem-building opportunity. It brought project topics directly to future junior engineers who will soon work on energy, infrastructure and sustainability challenges, while also generating early-stage insights into possible applications for data centre waste heat recovery.

By connecting education, applied research and real-world case studies, the blog post underlines a key message: data centre waste heat can support the energy transition, but only when digital infrastructure, thermal-energy planning and end users are considered together.
