New Blog Post: Measuring Local Flow Velocity in Immersion Cooling Systems

MODERATOR has published a new blog post by SINTEF exploring how local flow velocity can be measured within immersion cooling systems.
In immersion cooling, the movement of dielectric cooling fluid plays an important role in both system performance and component safety. Flow conditions can vary significantly across a cooling tank and within the narrow passages of individual server blades, influencing how effectively heat is removed from the IT equipment.
The blog post presents SINTEF’s work on miniaturised thermal anemometry as a potential method for measuring these low local flow velocities. The compact sensors can be placed close to, or potentially inside, relevant flow paths while causing minimal disturbance to the fluid.
SINTEF has developed a dedicated test setup to assess this approach under operating conditions relevant to immersion cooling. The initial tests indicate that the technique could support system design optimisation, validation of computational fluid dynamics simulations and future monitoring of local flow conditions.
By improving the understanding of how cooling fluid moves inside immersion cooling systems, this work contributes to the development of more reliable and efficient thermal-management solutions for future data-centre infrastructure.
